Life is a game of chess with death
only the fortunate may win another breath

My own bitter defeat
came through an unexpected feat

crushed me by taking my queen

Ah such a nice description!!!! Chess has always been a symbol of power and life to me. There are pawns and there are bishops, no one created equal. And if you're a pawn... Well you're being used by the king. I enjoyed this imagry, but don't worry; there's still time to get your queen back ;) just use a pawn :P

This reminds me of my favourite Borges poem (entitled "Chess"). But you're quote-on-quote version is equally powerful and splendidly concise while still maintaining its uniqueness. Well done! Much enjoyed!
