The Beach Where We Stand

The Beach Where We Stand

A Poem by Garison
"

I made this one night. I like it. I hope you do too

"
We are standing on a beach.
Alone, we stand together.
You and I, together.
I notice the size of the beach.
I see it for the long dune that it is.
The stretches of sand distract me.
I search through the grains for some thing that isn't there.
You are still beside me.
You are not looking at the beach.
You are looking at me.
I hear the waves, lapping on the shore.
I turn and look down as the water recedes.
I watch as more sand is revealed.
The beach feels too large.
I'm swallowed by its vastness
But you still don't look down.
It feels like forever.
We stand there.

The sand is overwhelming now.
I can't handle the sheer quantity.

You call my name.

The sound pierces my thoughts.

You call again.

I try to occupy myself with the sand.
I crouch, searching for nothing

You rest your hand on my back and whisper my name.

I look up.

You're smiling.
A warm smile.
A kind smile.
Behind you, birds fly past.
Free in the wind, they sing their tunes.
Swimming through the sky, they serenade us with your songs.
You never look away from me.
I see the clouds behind you.
Vibrant oranges and pinks.
The air, painted with the wondrous wisps.
I look to the horizon, out past the water.
The sun is setting, casting it's warm glow onto everything around.
It never fully sets.
It remains there, in the sky with the clouds.
Barely dipping into the sea.

I finally exhale.

I close my eyes, and I cry.
I lean into you and you wrap your arms around me.
You hold me there, embracing me with all the warmth in the world.
I open my eyes and look into yours.
You are still looking at me, but now I see it.
Now I understand.
And I never let go.

We stay there.
Just you and I.
Alone, we stand together.
Standing on a beach.
