The Ocean is Just a Pool of Revenge

The Ocean is Just a Pool of Revenge

A Poem by Gideon Nelson
"

A long poem for an oil spill that shouldn't have happened. This is dedicated to the Gulf.

"

Patience.

Just rest for a while;

Sit.

Be calm.

Nothing is wrong,

Everything is perfect.

Just rest for a while.

See the smiles.

Enjoy them!

They’re of your

Creation.

Without you,

They wouldn’t be here,

They would be

Anywhere.

You’re calm makes them

Smile.

See the smiles

(and enjoy them).

Feel that familiar tug

Whose schedule is like…

Clockwork

On the Moon’s

Watch.

Draw back,

But only for

A little while.

You’ll come back.

You’ll see more smiles.

Feel the familiar tug.

Feel the familiar push,

Whose schedule is,

Once again,

Like clockwork

On the Moon’s

Hourglass.

Glide forward,

(Getting closer,

See them scatter,

Then come back

Quickly)

But only for

A little while.

You’ll go back.

You’ll see more smiles.

Feel the familiar push.

Let your crest crash

On the little children.

Let them feel your

Enveloping wave.

Then quickly draw back;

See their reaction.

(But do it again

Because that’s what they

Expect from you).

Hear their laughter,

Enjoy yourself.

Let your crest crash.

Feel the bump of the boats.

Lead them over the water,

Into your abyss.

Take them where

They don’t know,

Let them see the things

They don’t know.

Show them your wonders.

Feel the bump of the boats.

Take them away.

But do so carelessly.

They can manage.

If they lose their way,

It’s not your fault.

You only wanted a friend.

Being so large,

Many fear you.

But you don’t bite

Or scratch.

You only want a friend

To stay with you forever.

Take them away.

Give them a hug.

If they fall,

They must have done so willingly.

It’s nothing more than

A ride!

And you just want a friend!

A tangible friend

Who will stay with you,

Play with you underneath

Your surface.

Who will understand you.

Who will hug you back

When you hug them.

Take them in your grasp,

Pull them under.

Give them a hug.

Take the boat out to sea.

You’re too innocent

To understand their ways.

They’re a dangerous breed.

A strange species.

See their poles and cages

Without knowing what they are,

Without knowing what they’re used

For.

Stare as they go down.

Amazed at that contraption.

See it rising

Minutes later.

Something’s inside,

But what?

Hear their shouts,

Their whoops of success.

Watch the cage open,

See the movement.

Recognize the creature.

No!

Don’t let them take your

Only friends.

Those are your property.

They don’t possess

The right to take

What’s yours.

Take the boat out to sea.

Feel the rage.

They are stealing from

YOU!

They are taking some of your

Few possessions!

Don’t let them do this!

Use your anger.

Build it up.

Feel the tension?

Use it.

Circle around,

First in a large circle,

Then make it tighter.

And tighter.

The flop of the creature

Making you even angrier.

Look at their faces,

See their terror.

Let that encourage you.

Swirl tighter

And tighter

Make them realize

Their mistake

Too late

Before the hole

You make

Swallows them whole

And they’re dead

Before dawn could break.

Be happy with the lives

You take.

Feel the rage.

Be calm again.

Go back to normal,

Crash on the beach,

Have fun for Pete’s sake.

No one will know it was you.

Just let them blame it

On the ship

That was dead

Before their wake.

Let the newspapers scream

LOST AT SEA

Because they don’t know

That they’re dead,

Not lost.

Be calm again.

Take the boat out to sea,

But be on your

Toes.

You’re more careful now.

You don’t see cages

Or poles.

This is good.

You do, however,

See machinery.

Strange, different contraptions.

Watch as they rest

On top of your surface.

They just sit there"

Day and night.

But night is much different.

In one hasty second,

BOOOM

And debris pounds you,

A shock wave goes through you

That leaves you to shake

In this quake’s

Wake.

Orange illuminates the sky

And you feel something.

Something strange,

Something new.

This unnatural smoothness

Is surprisingly comforting.

Until you see it.

The black is what captures you.

Nothing about you is that black.

It spreads.

A rash on

Your perfection,

Your happiness.

You’re too numb to do

Anything about it.

What would you do anyway?

Nothing.

Take the boat out to sea.

Feel it spread.

It gets longer and longer.

It paints your friends black,

It drowns them in black.

How could a quake

Leave such black

In their wake?

The creatures you now lack

Will never be back.

This black is a murderer.

It reaches land,

Turning yellow black

Because sand can be

Darkened.

This black seems to lack emotion.

It doesn’t care about you.

Not how you shake

With terror.

It hates you.

And that makes you mad.

The earth is enraged,

Nothing will turn in black.

Retaliation is all it knows.

Feel it spread.

Feel a quake.

Watch the earth shake.

Hear distant screams

Watch buildings crash.

It’s your turn to smile.

Here’s your chance!

The earth and you must

Work together.

If the earth quakes,

You should shake.

Take its tension.

Build it up for yourself.

Draw back.

Break the Moon’s watch.

Wait…

Wait…

Your time is almost here.

Wait…

Wait…

Your time is near.

Wait…

Wait…

Your time is here.

GO!

GO NOW!

Release the tension

Build yourself up

Lift yourself higher

Than any of those puny humans.

Lift over the land

Crash on top of them!

Feel their screams as your

Water floods their bodies!

They CANNOT

Destroy you now!

You will not be numb.

You will not be stolen from.

You’re in charge.

You can kill them all.

So do it.

Feel the revenge seeping

In your waves.

Release the tension

And use it to your advantage.

Feel the quake.

Calm; be calm.

Crash on innocent beaches,

Play with little children.

Hug your new friends.

Carry new friends away.

You’re innocent, remember?

Calm; be calm.

But be prepared"

It will happen again.

Patience.
