I like writing beginnings to stories. It's the finishing that I have trouble with. Tell me what you think of this opening!
I sat anxiously on the bus, waiting for the phone call. The phone call that could change the very fabric of nature. The phone call that could change everything, or nothing. It could suppress pollution. Cause the human races extinction. Allow people to read other peoples minds, communicate with animals, control a meteor,or kill everything on planet earth!
Imagine waiting for that phone call. It's the not knowing thats killing me. This phone call could tell me anything, anything at all and it will happen. I looked at my phone, the screen was black. I clicked a button so the light would turn back on. It didn't. Oh. My. God. Here I am waiting for the most important phone call in history and my phone was off! I cursed under my breath and quickly turned the on button on my phone. Immediately the light on my phone turned back on, and in huge letters on my screen it said: One missed call. Crap!
Funny. It's got a punchline. I like it for a short, humorous anecdote. I'm not sure there's a lot you could do from there. Trouble is, it doesn't really seem to take it self seriously enough to carry on into a story. I don't mean that in a bad sense... but: [suppress pollution. Cause the human races extinction. Allow people to read other peoples minds, communicate with animals, control a meteor,or kill everything on planet earth!] That's a tall order for making a serious story out of... unless the one waiting for the call is delusional, and waiting for something that's not going to happen.
Anyway, for what its worth... I thought it was funny. By the way, I think there are a lot of us out there who have an easier time starting then ending.
