The Request

conversation between dim wit boss and nerdy IT dweeb

The Request (part 1 of 2)

I need you in here, and I need you right now,

yes sir boss, what is it that you need,

I need an application, I want you to show me how,

give me the information, and I'll take the lead

I need this application, to do anything I want,

anything at all, is that what you really mean,

thats what I said, and in every kind of font,

this is going to be tough, is this for the Queen

I don't want to hear, that this can't be done,

I'm just not sure, where exactly do I start,

you're supposed to be the wiz, they say you are the one,

I am very good, but your information is short

I want every whistle, every bell, I want the best,

I'm still not sure, just what you want, can you tell me more,

just run along, and start it now, quit being such a pest,

I just need the information, I'm not trying to be a bore

why can't you just do it, why do you make this fuss,

I cannot reach the stars, if I don't know my destination,

I want it by tomorrow, now I've got to catch a bus,

but, please, please listen to me ….

(to be continued)

this is a classic example of a manager in authority that has no idea what their doing - this type of manager operates under the illusion that they are in their position of power to just bark orders instead of understanding the dynamic of the team; understanding their talents and being able to communicate clearly - how can we ever provide something that is so abstract - yes it is nice that the manager gives you the freedom to be creative but when they provide no clear direction - anything you come back with will be wrong and it won't be anyone's fault....no one can read minds.

I just posted a poem that's first two lines fit this to a T; "Never."

Never waste time talking
To someone who's not listening;

I been where this fellow is and it can be frustrating. Sometimes, you can pull a rabbit out of the hat and suffice the clown that they have put in charge of entertaining the idea that he's in charge. Most of the jobs that I have every done ran alot more smoothly, when the boss called in sick.

I am waiting with bated breath for the next addition!

Very humorous - looking forward to part two.

Reminds me of a boss I had who would say "If I wanted it tomorrow I would have asked for it tomorrow".

May I suggest a change of font or indentation to ease the distinction of which voice is which.

Aha Gomer.. something to make me smile again as it sounds like a good many bosses!
Demanding- many demands seem outrageous.
This leaves me in suspense waiting for the reply...

Peace

I remember getting requests like this, back when I was a computer programmer and people thought I could do anything. I am remembering those times with fondness for the wonderful group of people I worked with. I don't think you meant this poem the way I am taking it...but I loved the requests I received for the impossible, or nearly impossible. My reputation was that I could make any information accessable (I made database related programs) and although I don't think I was any kind of genius, I think people liked my attraction to challenges. Your poem describes so closely one of my favorite requests (even the bus part)...and I delivered! In fact my program is now used all over the country for the company I worked for. I don't mean to brag, I really am very humble generally, but you really woke up a great memory!
