self knowledge comes into being

when we are aware of ourselves

without understanding ourselves,

our illusions, fantasies, ignorance, strife

one cannot begin this knowledge

one cannot reach the meditative state

I believe you have to love yourself the way you are and then if you find you need to do some changing then change but not for anyone else but for yourself to be a happier more productive person in life and not meaning work related
