For Nicole, Still lovedA Poem by Gregoria AhmedA poignant poem for my niece Nicole, written through the ache of love shaped by conflict. You came into this world quiet and wise, with a stare that could pause the room, serious in a way that made us laugh, as if you already knew too much too soon. I learned to soften my edges for you, even when the people surrounding your cradle came with storms I didn’t invite, I made peace with what I disliked, just to offer you peace. You learned to speak before the world taught you what silence costs. You held conversations while other toddlers chased noise. Even then, you were different, not louder, but deeper. And now you pass by, turning the other way, mirroring the man whose shadow shouldn’t define you. I see his choices in your silence and I ache, because you are not him. You are you, the girl who once made me laugh without trying, whose tiny voice once softened our walls. And while your footsteps now echo with rebellion, mine remain open, if you ever want to find your way back. Because the kind of love I offer doesn’t belong to your father, doesn’t vanish with his pride; it lives in your name, in memories of mangoes shared, and in hopes that still bloom even in quiet soil. © 2025 Gregoria AhmedAuthor's Note
