Too far from home - Part 2

A Chapter by Holly O'Brien

In this fantasy, in this world...we are all spectacles of nature

Was Lilly dreaming all of a sudden? The feel of earth beneath her body told her no. She was still somewhere…

She felt strange as if she were only a traveling soul longing to feel her body. She slowly opened her eyes. There were thousands of small colorful lights that looked like drifting glitter. The sky was a mixture of lavender swirled in pink; it looked like an unmoving evening sky. Beautiful flowers decorated the hilly landscape before her. Their colors were so bright to Lilly they seemed like an illusion. Lilly twirled around laughing in splendor. Such overwhelming beauty made her giddy.

Follow me to your new home.” The fairy said suddenly appearing into view. The fairy flew off quickly and Lilly hurriedly followed.

Beautiful, gigantic trees towered over the small pathway, they were in fact, the biggest trees she had ever seen in her life. Her excitement was overflowing and she could hardly retain it.

Finally they came to a large tree with a hollow opening at its trunk. The fairy flew inside and Lilly got on her hands and knees crawling in behind it. Once inside though, she could stand up. In fact, the room was huge. A very bright, yellowish light illuminated throughout the room as Lilly slowly looked around. To her amazement there was a vast amount of toys sprawled about the floor; dolls, toy cars, toy trains, stuffed animals puzzles, boardgames, just about everything a child could ask for. She also noticed three cradles in one corner of the room, two of them looked worn but the other looked quite new.

Are there other children here?” she asked the fairy curiously.

Sometimes” The fairy answered distractedly.

Look!” the fairy exclaimed in excitement, she darted to a darker corner of the room.

As she did her glow emitted a generous amount of light to reveal a large table that was overflowing with treats. It was a splendid setup; colorful candy of all sorts of shapes and sizes, beautiful flowers decorated it along the sides...lining the edges with various shades of wonderful colors, and there were so many different pastries. Many kinds of cakes with various frosting, cupcakes with mounds of sprinkles, cookies. There was even ice-cream!

Lilly rubbed her eyes to be sure she was seeing right. What could a fairy know about ice-cream? She walked shyly toward the table, her eyes begging the fairy for approval.

Please help yourself, it's all for you Lilly.” The fairy said as her eyes let out an enchanting glow.

A huge smile spread across Lilly's face and she ran straight for the delicious looking pastries that filled her nose with such a sweet aroma. Lilly threw the food into her mouth chewing and gulping as she eyed and scooped up her next food of choice quite greedily one after the other. It was not after a few minutes of stuffing her face that she realized she was feeling as if she was eating nothing at all. She paused for a moment and looked up at the fairy who was humbly hovering just above her watching smugly. Lilly's mouth chewed slowly as her mind wandered on the toys that had no children to play with them.

Do you like the food Lilly?” the fairy asked with a smile.

Lilly nodded rapidly, suddenly feeling pressured and confused.

Eat some more! It's all yours...you don't have to share it with anyone.” The fairy's words seemed genuine, but Lilly felt as if she was being mocked.

However, she continued to eat more, deciding that she did not want to hear the fairy say too much to her.

Lilly ate, and ate some more, until the table was cleaned of all of its delights. However, her stomach only growled in frustration. She rested her hand on it hoping that her ears were only playing tricks on her. But the rumbling only continued under the feel of her fingertips.

You should play with some toys now Lilly.” the fairy said watching her with contentment.

Lilly looked up at the fairy, she now felt a strong urge to leave this strange place. She did not feel at ease anymore. Instead, she felt tense and fear began to invade her thoughts.

I'm tired now, I want to go home.” Lilly said suddenly feeling a bit dreary.

The fairy suddenly gave a glare that made Lilly want to run.

This is your home now Lilly.”

Lilly looked toward the door, but it was no longer there. Her pulse began to quicken as her nerves caused her skin to sting.

But I wanna go home now.” She started to cry almost instantly..

Lilly, please don't cry...that's going to make me angry.” As the fairy said this, the lighting in the room began to die down and odd shadows began overshadowing the walls. Then Lilly could hear a strange growling sound as if something else was entering the room. It sounded like an angry dog, but something told Lilly it was something else.

Lilly's crying stopped instantly as she watched and listened to the horrific sound of a beast she hoped not to see.

There now, all better.” The fairy said almost gleefully.

Are you going to play with your toys now?”

Lilly nodded quickly and shakily walked over to a small doll on the floor sitting so she could play with it. When she picked up the doll however, it had the strangest facial expression. It's mouth was twisted into a huge frown and its eyes looked as if it were crying. It almost looked like it was....alive.

Lilly looked back up at the fairy, who seemed to now be doing a strange dance. It was slowly twisting its body into different shapes as spurs of glittery light sprung from its wings.

All Lilly could do was watch. She seemed to become transfixed as a trance slowly beset her.

And for the many days and nights that followed, she only sat in a corner of the room staring bleakly at nothing at all. She was constantly hungry and always tired, but could not sleep. The food that the fairy provided, only left her as hungry as she ever was.

Then many weeks had passed and Lilly remained in this torturous state. Her body was just stiff and she could no longer move! Paralyzed she now felt like she was only alive in her mind. She could see that her skin was now a gleaming surface, as if it were plastic.

What's happening to me?” She finally asked, unsure if the fairy had heard her.

To her surprise, when the fairy came into view, it was much bigger than she had last seen it. Yet, it flew just the same. Lilly looked around, the room was now larger as well!

You're almost one of my children Lilly.”

Lilly wanted to scream, but she was so weak, all she could do is allow the tears to drip down her face as she longed to be home. She wanted to be with her father, her mother....and her new baby brother.

The fairy smiled and flew out of sight again.

Lilly could feel her breathing tightening, it was as if all of the air was being sucked out of her but it also felt like she almost did not need to breathe. She allowed the tiredness that had been haunting her for so many days to overtake her. Her mind started to drift off as she felt her eyes slowly closing inviting an emerging darkness.

Lilly, can you hear me?” She heard her father say.

Still in the darkness she could not find her way. Where could he be.

Lilly?” she heard him call again.

This time when he did, she started to feel air against her skin. Warm air was touching her and she was so happy. She knew she would be safe soon, she could almost move her fingers.

Did you see that?” Her father shot a look up at the doctor.

Yes, she is responding!” The doctor exclaimed as he ran to the side of the bed where her father was sitting.

Lilly could hear them and see them too! However, she could not speak as her body lied motionless in the hospital bed. Wires were attached to her almost at every angle and an oxygen mask was attached to her face.

The doctor shined a small light in both her eyes and then used a stethoscope to listen to her heartbeat.

She is definitely making progress.”

He took her by the hand as her father watched hopefully.

Lilly, if you can hear me, I want you to try and move your fingers again.”

Lilly tried with all of her might, but she was unable to to do it again. And for several minutes they repeated this, until they decided to wait in hopes that she would eventually be able to progress some more.

Her father stared at her for a moment, and she wanted so badly to reach for him, but she could not. Tears slid down his cheeks as he continued to look at her as if he was willing her to speak.

I wish I had given her more attention.” He said to the doctor who was now standing a few feet behind him writing some notes.

The doctor looked at him with compassion and rested a hand on his shoulder.

You and your wife already do all that you can. It's never easy to deal with a child with such an extreme behavioral disorder.”
