Abandoned Writers Cafe

A Poem by Relic

Empty rooms in empty halls.

Accounts silent - long abandoned
the words bankrupt
vacant fronts of creativity
washed over; hollow; run down.

Verbs sway on rusted hinges
the strains of old poems
cross pages like tumbleweeds.

Profiles shuttered - desolate
unopened for years, collect dust
while messages to forgotten friends
go unanswered

Pinned to a page

I still visit the profiles of old friends here, some that I know seldom if ever, revisit the site. Others are departed from life itself. I revisit their comments on my posts on other sites as well. I'll find one and say, well, wasn't that nice? This is eloquently poignant. I enjoyed and I relate. F.

As do I. They are like monoliths on a partways barren land.

The dust and cobwebs that covered abandoned accounts have an eloquent voice via your poem to them all!

Thank you, Dee. :)
I just joined this site a few days ago and I already have more beta readers for my novel than I do on Wattpad, which is one. lol. No but on a serious note this is a very nice little piece, I definitely get the "ghost town" vibe on this site, I go to some people's profiles and they haven't posted anything for yearsssss lol. Much different than stuff I see on Wattpad.

Getting reviews or views isn't easy on any site these days Illuminate92. I've been here 9 years and .. read more
The internet's a vast ocean so easy to travel with many a shore just a push of the button away. While we stay in one café and get cosy on the island it can seem as though a writers words become "bankrupt", but... I like this poem, Relic (appropriate pen name): it speaks more about the anchored (or the wrecked) than those who have raised their sails and caught the wind. What is it like to have a boat and keep it locked in the garage with the dirt floor? In world of transition, change, and mutability is it the stagnant who are lost? What is a highway if everyone stands still? These are the kinds of questions inspired by your poem. Thanks for sharing.

Thanks, Bacchus.
There are a writers I miss and those I don't. Those I miss, I counted as friends and valued their friendship, as I did their writing. I am become sad when I go to a favourite writer and see 'this profile has been closed,' no explanation; nothing, just gone as if they never were.

Your poem very much brings the loss home.

Beccy.

Thank you for reading.
I cannot say I enjoyed this because it is not that kind of poem. What I can say is that I got a lot from it. Feelings, memories, losses, friends now gone. People I knew and respected, no longer here. The atmosphere in this lost cafe is absolute and palpable.

I couldn't agree more, Ken. Thanks for your thoughts.
This could be such a great forum, and truthfully it is...for archiving our work. You’ve captured the abandonment here so excellently. I felt like I’d come to one of those old fill-up stations in the desert southwest that once had its heyday, so to speak.
