Thinking about closing your account?

A Story by Relic

Thinking about closing your account?
Don't even try it.

I hold the record for opening and closing my account on this site more than anyone. (with the exception of one other person).
I am the king. And as the king I reign as the close account button thing king.

* Thinking about giving up? Cast away those thoughts to the wind.
I hold that record as well. Yet, I always come back, my long red cape dragging behind and my crown high on my head.

* Are you under the impression your writing is no good anymore?
Haha, I scoff at your joke with a zesty smile and a dab of cackle.
My pen has been rusting since 1972.
Well, maybe not that long...but...never mind.

The point is there are people among us who have a natural talent for writing and will have lots of reviews on a regular basis. But they also do a lot of zesty reviews that leave the writer with a tingly feeling that lasts the rest of the minute.

On the other hand, many don't care about popularity or reviews. They only post just to post. (or...something like that). :/

I'm stuck here in the Twilight Zone. But as for you, ask yourself why you like to write. Is it to get lots of reviews, to be popular, or to be liked? You may be writing for the wrong reason. People write because they love it. It's okay to go off the track. I've been off a long time. But someday I may get a groove back. Maybe you will too.

So don't close your account like me. Go away awhile and see if you want to come back. If you do, you may love writing. If you don't, perhaps you've discovered something better like others have.

But funny enough. I've seen people peeking back in that have been away a long time. Are they wondering?

The choice is yours. But remember, the luster of my crown could blind you.

Something that was said by William Forester in the movie "Finding Forrester" makes sense..."the best time in writing is when you have written something and you look at it yourself for the first time, before anyone else has the chance to chop it to pieces..."
so true...I write because i almost have to...i feel lucky when the muse visits...but feel more like a conduit and that the words just come and i write them down...can't really take credit for the writing itself...but i feel the best part of it all is the process and getting in that zone...
I really love the cafe because i read so many poets on here who simply inspire my muse to move my fingers over the keys.
I am lucky to get my share of reviews...but I would be just as happy if i got none, the writing is the thing that is important....
And I have closed my account a few times, but I have done that when I feel too overwhelmed with life and don't have time to reciprocate reviews...i don't feel fair to the other poets when that happens..so i take a break...
I do smile when some close their accounts and come back saying they were not inspired or just not writing so they left...staying and reading and commenting is the perfect inspiration...

This is a thoughtful piece...and there is much truth to it.

You, sir, are very funny. I will not challenge your claim to the crown.

I write because it brings me joy. I post on here in the hopes of finding others looking for what I want: to improve my craft. I have to admit, reviews give me a boost, but mainly, I just want to improve. Writer's block tortures me from time to time, but I always keep up with my account here, and have found so much encouragement and so many helpful critiques. Early on, I had a thin skin, but I can stand pretty harsh, blunt critiques these days. I am usually successful in getting whatever good there is to be had out of each review.

Glad to hear that, Thanks so much for your thoughts. :)
Why do I write? Compelled to do so. Can't help it. And yes I am guilty of closing my account a couple of times over the last 14 months for a break, but I come back. Don't worry your crown is your own, I am not after nicking it. Interesting write Tim.

Old soldiers never quit, go forward till they can't no-more. I need writing and sometimes hard to make time to write and read. A few people on the site, left and came back 40 plus times. Us, old timers. We must keep writing. Always a pleasure to read your work.

So, I hope you are well King Relic and long may you and your gifted quill reign :))

I guess I'm the opposite of that. I've been lurking in the corner of the café for over 10 years, waiting on the waitress to warmup my coffee and bring me my breakfast.

Except for the last 10 years I've wrote just for myself. My love for writing began in the 3rd grade somewhere between penmanship and poetry.
and
I write because- I simply must.

I don't need the reviews, but my poor family needs relief from being read to. :) and me asking them questions about it after. :( the poor people.

I say be your own biggest fan and critic. Then any other reviews you get is just sprinkles on the cake. If someone gives you a poor review, take a moment and relook at your work. The review may have nothing to do with the story and everything to do with that readers perspective of your vision. So if you can bring that story into a sharper focus, your audience will expand.

I post here to share a passion with others who have the same. Our topics and styles vary, and to me that's what makes the dish so tasty. So I say no matter where you write just keep writing.

PS I like my cake chocolate.

Thanks so much for sharing your thoughts, Amber. It's good to see you here again. :)
I found it amusing that right after I opened my account this evening, this piece was the first one that appeared on my homepage :P
I think there's a certain charm in this site, which makes people like me and you ;) return. I also think that maybe as newbies, we do write to see how good we are in writing or to 'get' reviews, but after a while, that part just fades away and we mainly write for ourselves in the end. I usually close my account when there's a lot of drama going on in the site and because I prefer not knowing what goes on in here except writing, which would be impossible to follow if I keep my account open lol
Anyway, good booster write, I'd say. Thank you, Tim. :)

Thanks for your comment, Dr.
This is some profound s**t being passed off as flippant conversation. I relate to everything, even tho I've not been plagued by insecurities about my ability to write. Fortunately, I've had strong natural confidence that I'm meant to write, since pre-adolescence. But most people probably gone thru some or most of what you describe. I used to think that, when something wasn't working for me anymore, I would abruptly close doors & scamper off to the next pursuit. Now that I'm old, I see more value in not closing so many doors. Sometimes we can fade out for a while & wait for the next time it feels right to go in again. It may not ever feel right again, but at least leaving the door open to the possibilities for a few months, to see if things ever shift. Anyhow, I'm always glad that the urge to return to the cafe has always prevailed in you (((HUGS))) Fondly, Margie

Truth! I’ve closed my account 5-6 times, and I always come back. It’s my community, a place among friends I want to be... reviews or not. Thanks for sharing this one.
