Father ’n Son

Father ’n Son

A Poem by Relic

One afternoon beneath a tree,
my age no more than twenty-three,
'pon Mary's supple, soft red cheek
I placed a kiss that made me weak.

In me, her charms endowed romance
with ev'ry quick, flirtatious glance.
At every turn of every stroll,
a kiss from her I gladly stole.

As years elapsed, we merged with fun;
then, traded vows … we had a son.
I saw our young man’s growing drive,
bestowed by life to make men thrive.

And then, one day at twenty-three,
a girl he kissed beneath a tree.
I need not share what follows next,
it parallels my prior text.

I only hope when we’ve grown old,
our legacy will thus be told …
“The girls we'd kissed beneath a tree,
made all live very happily.”

I really like this poem....like Cat Stevens' "Father and Son" values passed down.
At 23 we know not what is to come....but the outcome here is quite perfect.

By the way, I didn't know he had a song by that name. I'll give it a listen.
I'll agree with that! And your poem too. Smooooooth. I usually recite a rhymed poem like this out loud and this one came off the tongue easy and funny as well. With the profound truth of the cycle of our lives under it. Would you call this an Epigram?

An Epigram? I never thought about that when writing.. read more

As I understand it an epigram is any short humorous poem that tells a story. But I'm still learning

This poem was so good to read... it has emotion, joy and a certain preciousness of relationships. Life comes a full circle and so beautifully here. It makes me feel our time on earth though brief is made so much more meaningful by love. The rhyme is lovely and the meter is foot tapping! Kudos dear Relic!
