I remember when this site was a close knit community with lots of talented writers. Now, it seems like a dull place to come to with ads, ads, ads, and more ads.
.
What a shame it's become a shell of what it used to be.
With a moderator who's never here, the site hasn't been updated or improved in years. It reminds me of an abandoned lot left unattended growing weeds. People have left. Ads have made the popular page!

I've been here at WC since 10+ years, and this place has really helped me a lot to evolve as writer, a poet and a philosopher.
I've had people who appreciated and admired my work(you've been one of them), and I've had genuine, honest critiques too, who didn't just pointed out my flaws, sometimes in public and sometimes in private mails.I've had good friends and consistent reviewers too, and I've had had people whom I've reviewed much, and they hardly did, and ended up blocking me for no reason..Lol. I also, had people who have always reviewed my writing in all their enthusiasm, without me sending them an RR.(Though there's hardly except some I've today)
But honestly, what I've had here, I'll have nowhere else, I really realise that, and I miss those good old days, When WC was bright, soothing and it had real writers, poets and friends who prioritised writing, communication and believed in helping others excel too.
It was so much fun being here, but since past year/years this place has become dull, indeed! Sometimes when I post any of my writings here, I really wonder if people really exist here? I really don't know what went wrong, but this place has really turned wierd in a way, it never used to be before! Sometimes I feel this place only has scammers, and ads, and fake profiles now, who keep stalking and bullying the other genuine good people here.
And their is no place for communication, development, and evolution of thoughts and positive exchange of writing here.
I'm also facing the same, what you've described here, and it's really disgusting! and it is hence I completely feel, and agree with you here, Relic/Sami.
People are no more responsive here, the moderators and administrators as usual here, sleep with no worries, and the nuisance has become the dominant part of this site .As for the old writers (like us) ..we're sometimes even worried to see all this, and scared sometimes, thinking what might happen more.
But I feel, something really needs to be done.Because this has been a special place for us as friends, as novice and as blooming writers, and we can't see it going barren like this.
Thankyou for sharing your sentiments fellow writer, sharing it was the need of the the hour
Thankyou.

I too have loved this site for many years, but now I have no desire to come here anymore which is a shame.

Sometimes, all we can do, is see the sand grains slipping away, but can't help it except already seeing the loss, and realising that it once meant so much, and still does! What an irony, indeed.
I have been here a long, long time, and my heart aches at what this site has become now. Its sad. Its a former shell of what it used to be. When you actually get the page to load, its mostly this AI generated garbage. All the real writing requires digging, which, on a writing website, shouldn't be. I have met so many amazing people and wonderful, beautiful souls. I have read poetry that has stuck with me for years. I have read stories I still think about. To see its downfall is so horribly tragic.
I was wondering the same thing. I'm new here, so I can only imagine that it was once a much better maintained website with far less AI generated ad-spam content to have to scroll past. And the pages seem to load extremely slow, timing out in many cases, as if the server has served drinks to too many customers for too long and needs a union break. Blocking repeat offenders doesn't keep them from showing up in the feed, so as a tool, I don't know what purpose it serves. Anyway, I appreciate the real people on who submit their writing for review and comment on other's work. Maybe it can be good again. I'd hate to see it disintegrate further.
I know there have always been ads but back 10 years ago there were enough people using the site as intended that it didn't seem so bad. Now there are definitely more spam accounts than real ones. And that's not even counting the accounts that are real but just seem to be owned by people who want to behave inappropriately. The ads might be a constant battle, but there's definitely some behavior that could be easily modified or stopped by some fairly simple moderation. I don't know anything about running a website but I feel like I could learn. Surely he could still keep the revenue it generates and appoint proxies to run the site for him. I suspect there's more than one of us who would be willing to do it for free to get this place cleaned up a little. And who knows, if it can get anywhere close to the atmosphere it was a decade ago, maybe it will become a high traffic site again. That can only increase his profits. Is there anyone still around who can even feel him out on doing things with the site?
I still come around because there are still great writers and writings on here but it can get so discouraging sometimes. I also value the relationships I've formed with people here. It is still incredibly gratifying when someone finds my work and loves it or replies to one of my reviews saying that they really appreciated it and it was encouraging to them. If it wasn't for the fact that I can still find these things, despite all of its flaws, I probably would have given the website up. It's definitely one of those "you only get what you put into it" situations now, but you have to give a little more to get a little less.
I too fear, however, that one day the site will crash and never come back up. Every time I get the error screen now I have to question if that will be the day it happens.

Hey Tim! I feel like a relic, having arrived here at the heyday when there were actually more writer's then ads! I'm afraid one day, when I go to click on, the site will be gone. Do we jump ship now, and go to another venue? Where? I started out at "The Starlite Cafe", back in 2000. Great place, run by a wonderful man who died of cancer, and ever so slowly, the site closed after changing hands. I came here in 2008, and was as happy as a clam to be here. I still am, but it comes with a cost. I think the people and the friendships make it bearable...and the poetry. Where else can you write something and have it read clear across the world? That's always fascinated me, these long years later. A good ad blocker helps immeasurably, too. At least we're in good company, right? Hang in there, my friend.

I use the browser called Brave which takes out the ads. However, as others have pointed out, the amount of ads in the live feed have increased and the amount of fake profiles has also increased making it an unpleasant visit each time I log in. I don't think the owner has control over the site anymore and that's a shame.

I should add, there's a bit coin ad that's set to become number one on the popular page.
I haven't been here long but it sounds like this site was created in the early days of the internet and it looks like it too. I'd like to see the old WC. Ads are annoying tho.
I am an old hat. I’ve had my writing on this site for over a decade I think. I joined after leaving the website called Storywrite, back when that one had gone downhill. As you’ll be able to tell from a quick perusal of my badges and other such things, I used to be quite active. But the important friend of mine who brought me here left and we lost touch, and that killed a lot of my desire to remain. Still, I have popped in from time to time, watching as the paint faded and the rust gathered. The Cafe has become a Withered Wonderland after all and tea is very cold, unlike the good old days. Too many ads, not enough…something real.
I understand the longing for the glory days and the way it made us feel. I think perhaps that is a symptom of the world at large as well…everything is fading. I feel as if we are approaching a Dark Age, one that will not be over quickly.
Thank you for the post. I slogged through a mire filled with ads just to read it.

Thanks so much for the comment, Caradoc. I agree with all you've said.
I've been an amateur scribbler since 2009. You can also find me on Stars Rite under my real name Tim. Many of those poems are from this account. more..
