What happened to Writers Cafe?

I remember when this site was a close knit community with lots of talented writers. Now, it seems like a dull place to come to with ads, ads, ads, and more ads.

What a shame it's become a shell of what it used to be. 

With a moderator who's never here, the site hasn't been updated or improved in years. It reminds me of an abandoned lot left unattended growing weeds. People have left. Ads have made the popular page!

I've been here at WC since 10+ years, and this place has really helped me a lot to evolve as writer, a poet and a philosopher.
I've had people who appreciated and admired my work(you've been one of them), and I've had genuine, honest critiques too, who didn't just pointed out my flaws, sometimes in public and sometimes in private mails.I've had good friends and consistent reviewers too, and I've had had people whom I've reviewed much, and they hardly did, and ended up blocking me for no reason..Lol. I also, had people who have always reviewed my writing in all their enthusiasm, without me sending them an RR.(Though there's hardly except some I've today)
But honestly, what I've had here, I'll have nowhere else, I really realise that, and I miss those good old days, When WC was bright, soothing and it had real writers, poets and friends who prioritised writing, communication and believed in helping others excel too.

It was so much fun being here, but since past year/years this place has become dull, indeed! Sometimes when I post any of my writings here, I really wonder if people really exist here? I really don't know what went wrong, but this place has really turned wierd in a way, it never used to be before! Sometimes I feel this place only has scammers, and ads, and fake profiles now, who keep stalking and bullying the other genuine good people here.
And their is no place for communication, development, and evolution of thoughts and positive exchange of writing here.
I'm also facing the same, what you've described here, and it's really disgusting! and it is hence I completely feel, and agree with you here, Relic/Sami.

People are no more responsive here, the moderators and administrators as usual here, sleep with no worries, and the nuisance has become the dominant part of this site .As for the old writers (like us) ..we're sometimes even worried to see all this, and scared sometimes, thinking what might happen more.

But I feel, something really needs to be done.Because this has been a special place for us as friends, as novice and as blooming writers, and we can't see it going barren like this.

I still come here because I love writing and reviewing....however I agree with Jacob that it's not the same place as before and the ads are super annoying and have cut me off many times while writing...something should be done....also I feel like I have made many "friends" and that I enjoy....it needs updating!!!

I have an idea...we could have a 2 tier system whereby tier 1 would be free with all the ad crap; tier 2 would be pay a slight monthly fee like $5-$7 dollars per month with no ads at all, comments?

There may be some who would go for that, but the mod/owner is unreliable. The ads might start slipping back in for those that pay.

You're very much right! I've been a member here for years and I've watched it slowly turn into a cesspool of ads and abandoned accounts. It feels as though the amount of active accounts has drastically dwindled, at least that's my perception, and after I once saw this place as a creative haven for me to explore the works of other writers and get feedback on my own, it has now become a shell of what it used to be. Hopefully this site will be revived or a new site will sprout from its place because writing sites are changing for the worst, I'm afraid...

Hi my friend. The ads are tiresome, the lack of moderators regrettable and the trolls a nuisance. What once used to be an essential to my day, now does not have that same urgency or enthusiasm. Happy to pop in now and again, there’s other stuff just as important.

Ah, the good old days, or were they? I remember the muscle ads of yesteryear, along with it glitching every once in a blue moon. But you are right, it was still better than what it is now, with witchdoctors and probably completely legit people wanting to help you retrieve your bitcoin at no added cost to the gullible, as well as those annoying a**e h***s who want to do the graphics on your next nno1 best-selling book, by copying and pasting the same message to everyone about their amazing story, which is usually a poem so I'm guessing they miss out on reading all those amazing poems and are maybe possibly just scamming the gullible once more.
But like everyone else who has reviewed you, I remember the old school of writers, who pop up occasionally when someone features an older write and you are left guessing what happened to them and missing their uniqueness or quirkiness.
The site is run to the ground and seeing a moderator online is rarer than something rare than really rare, on national be more rare than usual day and the glitches are far more frequent, if the amount of times I've been drop-kicked out mid post is anything to go by.
But of course that might just be the rose tinteds saying that, because I feel the same about MySpace and detest Facebook for its success.
Who knows, maybe one day it will be returned to its former glory, probably by a bot who misunderstood its instructions!

I, too, can vividly remember early Café days without ads, when members were more like a congenial family or real acquaintances one looked forward to greeting and sharing poetry and helpful critique with … most even returned reviews on a consistent basis.
Still, a "free"poetry site has to pay its way in some manner, eh?
Truthfully, though, I'd rather pay monthly or yearly dues to have a site like the old Writers' Café, and have the glitches solved than trudge through a persistent barrage of distractingly irritating ads.

I was at this site over a decade ago.
There were many great contributors here.
To be honest, the site had glaring issues then aswell - admittedly not as abandoned and littered as it is now, though.

Maybe, Relic - I don't know... maybe it remains whatever we can make it. As is true of any community, it's characteristics hinge on individuals that conglomerate in the region.
