A Blossom Fell.

A Blossom Fell.

A Poem by Relic

Under the slumped shoulders
of the café awning,
I watched small rain rings
bloom and break in puddles,
while my hair drifted
in September’s tired wind.

Nat King Cole sang softly
“A Blossom Fell”
through the hanging speakers
when she passed by,
and caught my eye.

I’d seen her.

In the bookstore?

Or was it something more?

Raindrops clung to the awning
like tears to a cheek.

And then it struck me.

She had aged
but the heartbreak she left me
still tapped my shoulder,
softly, insistently.

She once promised forever.
But forever ended early
the moment a stranger appeared,
and she chose him.

It’s strange how first love lingers.
Even when they become
someone you no longer know,
just passing by.

This is quietly heartbreaking in the best way. The rain, the song, the moment of recognition...it all lands so gently but cuts so deep. You captured how first love never really leaves us, even when the person does.

I still think about old girlfriends now and then. I appreciate your comments. Thanks. :)
Very poignant, this one. Beautiful imagery and similes capture a long buried memory of first love. Some memories never really die.
