Purposeless Pride

Purposeless Pride

A Poem by Rebecca Isherwood
"

5-3-04 High School Era- wrote this during history class when I should have been paying attention. :-P

"

Angry, pissed off
Say it as you like
All I know is tonight
There’ll be a fight
Screaming in pain
Head is pounding
Throbbing, heating
All noises resounding
Thrashing around
Inside my head
My own voice will
Soon be dead
Both hands are covered
In a bloody mess
When do I wake up?
Is this just a test?
The face in front of me
Contorted with fear
Driven by rage
Covered in tears
I take a swing
It hits hard
My hand and his face
Will now be scarred
Overspent muscles
And torn flesh
Massive red spreads
I need to rest
Instead we keep it up
Beating each other senseless
Mutilating the opponent
Until they’re defenseless
This won’t end until
One person gives up
I’m too tough to let it go
So tough luck
Pride keeps us both
Standing tall
Through the torture
Through it all
The doctors and stitches
The miles of thread
It’s a wonder we
Aren’t already dead
Then again, we
Might as well
This temper of mine
Places us in hell
The enemies are merely
Kept at bay but
Death and destruction
Are the American Way.
