Beyond the CureA Poem by Ita Bobo DAfrican PoetThe poem criticizes the healthcare system for prioritizing treatment over prevention, advocating for a shift in focus towards preventive measures to create a healthier society.
Hospitals save lives "
They are for urgency, For breath, for blood, In an emergency " every second is a prayer. Every delay is death. We spend millions to build hospitals, Millions to train professionals, On machines, on drugs that chase death. Curative is given the utmost attention… “Our doctors are gods, our nurses are angels. Omo ye kokromoti a wontumi nsan omo ho mbo po da Yet gods forget, Angels neglect. The mother dies in labour. The biker bleeds at dawn. The child gasps with fever " While the healer scrolls a phone.” They shout for better conditions " But who cares for the patient’s condition? When we question, they get angry They strike " Leaving the sick to die. Forgetting their oath, Forgetting their calling, Forgetting their duty. Nenso, wone hwan kɛka sɛ "komfo" se k""? They say an ounce of prevention Is worth a pound of cure. Prevention is the nation protecting its people " Before the sirens ever wail. It is easy to clean the street. It feels good to breathe clean air. It feels so good to drink clean water. It is simple to guard the people from hazards. For a healthy environment… is a healthy people. Hospitals save lives… But prevention saves nations! Hospitals save lives… But prevention saves generations! The healthiest nation Is not the one with the tallest hospitals " But the one where hospitals… stand empty. Because prevention already healed the people. This poem is the blood of the uncounted. This poem is the tears of families unheard. This poem is not hate, it is building a nation " Yours, mine, ours. © 2025 Ita Bobo DAfrican Poet |
