From Out of The Trees

From Out of The Trees

A Poem by J. C. Koch
"

Why do I write so much about her??

"

I woke to find myself alone in the wood,

In a field of tall grass, flowers, and bees,

And waited, rooted to the spot where I stood

Till I heard your voice from out of the trees.

It called out to me so softly and so sweetly.

You took off running as gracefully as a doe.

The trees’ soft song, I understood it completely.

At that moment I knew it was time to go.

The tree’s called out and told me to chase,

To run after you till my very breath gave out,

But you made it clear, I was no match for your grace,

You fell out of sight as I gave one final shout.

I awoke, to a dark room in the dead of night,

And remembered the truth about I and you.

You and I could never, together, be right.

Why is it only nightmares really ever come true?
