A New Years Poem

A New Years Poem

A Poem by John Sullivan

a new year
a new day

the futures clear
it's the only way

on this thoughtful night
know the past was fair

breath in this night
breath in the air

growing, changing
tomorrow's come

we know we're aging
we're on the run

time will come
and come again

come and see the stalwart son

good food for thought. maybe one step forward and two back but better to keep moving. “Never look back unless you are planning to go that way,” - Thoreau

Yes, the only way is forward, sometimes it is good to reminisce and enjoy memories as long as we don't let them hold us back from new tomorrows..

that's fine John and thank you :)
Such a hopeful poem, really liked it, and its message. I loved 'this thoughtful night', and made me think about how we look back before moving forward. I hope you have a happy new year John!

Your writing has a specific live tone to it; in this your words seem to drip-drip down the 'page' as if playing with notes as well as - let's say, 'lyrics' . Time between last year/this year is only overnight. done in seconds and yet, so much is made of it perhaps considered. Is it out hope for a miracle, a prayer or plea for a new life.. Guess we all, or most, need an excuse to hope and hope and keep on hoping. Who knows..

This is an upbeat look at New Year, which reminds many of the past and lost (Auld Lang Syne). Here however, we are advised to welcome the newcomer, breathe it in. The last three lines are interesting, seeming possibly to hint at reincarnation.
