The News

The News

A Poem by John Sullivan

morning dawns
a new day

the headlines silently scream
from the paper by the door

the byline of today
and the postscript of yesterday's trials

startled and alert

the ink flows off the newsprint
onto the floor
an ebon pool of intrigue
speaking in impartial tongues
of all the possibilities
the day may bring

have you heard the news today?

rays of light leak through the blinds
and the clock strikes the hour
the seconds have their say
but all the days are ours

Reminds me a bit of the song, A Day in the Life, by the Beatles.

I like it. :)

I had exactly that song playing in my head when I wrote this one! Thanks for reading!
A day in the life. I wish I didn't have to read the news each day but I have to and it doesn't help me one iota. And never has. Extraordinary work here John.

Thank you so much Ken, as always
"I read the news today, oh boy about a lucky man who made the grade
And though the news was rather sad well, I just had to laugh
I saw the photograph
He blew his mind out in a car
He didn't notice that the lights had changed." Lennon and McCartney I enjoyed this bit of a day in the life and the new perspective every morning can bring. Every day is pregnant with possibilities waiting to give birth to dreams. I particularly enjoyed the line, "ebon pool of intrigue" referring to the printer's ink, nicely wrought. F.

Thank you so much! Yeah I had exactly those lines in my head writing the thing.
Each new day is different, the headlines can be chaotic or just plain old boring... however, in today's universe the headlines are usually striking, disturbing, chaotic....news is something we read, hear or watch, and it has its effects upon our moods...what will be tomorrow?? the world spins around us but each new day belongs to us, no matter what is in the news....
Nice!
Warmly, B

You're very welcome John
Warmly, B
Your poem is marvelously stating the power of print, reading the paper and bring informed; it is hard to avoid the breaking news when they affect all of us.
You write Marvelously and impartially.

That's so very kind! I used to work as a journalist, perhaps impartiality is part of the trade... t.. read more

I noticed. You are welcome John/poet, journalist.
Something about the news in print always made it more "real" for me. Nicely done. ~Jim

There's something wonderfully tactile about paper. Thanks for reading!
The last one I read "Chaos" you said were the lyrics of a friend so I had to read this one as well. I particularly liked
the ink flows off the newsprint

an ebon pool of intrigue
speaking in impartial tongues
of all the possibilities
the day may bring"
This is such a vivid image and so unique.
" I heard the news today" reminded me of a line from the Beatles. A song I loved. This was a great poem

and I would rather I didn’t but I do and try to forget it afterwards.

Life is too short to get bogged down in the awfulness of the current climate of hostility. Nature is best.

So well penned John and I couldn’t agree more with the final stanza. Have a lovely day.

William Randolph Hearst agrees wholeheartedly. Always a pleasure my friend
Wonderfully expressed, I don't think I have read a poem more nicely done ;-]

Your kindness is too much, and I thank you.
For reasons of which I am not entirely sure, I subject myself to the daily news every AM. I think I would like to know about it if a category fiver was brewing in the Atlantic a hundred miles offshore. Or maybe I am interested in the wisdom that drips from Mr. Trump's tongue 24/7. But after the ordeal is over, as you say, all the days are mine.
