One Must Imagine Sisyphus Happy

One Must Imagine Sisyphus Happy

A Poem by John Sullivan

one must imagine Sisyphus happy

someone once wrote

Prometheus claimed fire for man

the light of knowledge and hope

but from the sight of man

like mirrors and smoke

from the sight of us

Olympus was smote

years passed,

came a Cross

and strange scripture to quote

the sin of the eye

the log

and

the mote

through deep waters

He’ll be with you

but Noah

needed

a

boat

in God it’s all the same, all the same… all the same

trembling brokenhearted beasts

growing

withered

and

lame

some say

the spear pierced a savior’s side

it’s only humanity’s wound

that

bleeding inside

the current has changed

but

not the moon or the tide

not for us so much

the halls of hope

which we proudly

did stride

One must imagine Sisyphus happy…

someone once wrote.

I really enjoyed this offering. Very good. I like how it starts with "One must imagine Sysyphus happy" and then building, in waves, then as if again, from the bottom- Sysyphus again "one must imagine..."
I like the challenge, to endure the pain and struggle of life- but to endure with joy. Reminds me of Mother Theresa and her smiling through the roughest of India.
In addition to this, your complex rhyming schemes are well done! Good -interesting poem here sir.

I don't know how Sisyphus will ever get happy with gravity working against him. He might start by changing his name.

Some say there's meaning in the struggle... let's hope so...
look at the bright side - at least sisyphus is keeping fit.

Had a grin I did, Pete's a wit!

Lovely biblical quote. Happy New Year, Pete.
Yep, and the only mention of us is in the wounding! Some things never change, do they?
No wonder the aliens avoid us like were on the naughty step of the universe! 😀

Wow so much written in this piece. We as mankind find a way to represent our toils and turmoil in the symbolic myths of the mind. They bear our cross and fight the gorgons they fly on wax glued wings and travel the river Styx. With elephant heads or those of the jackal they mark our walls as well as churches and brains. Nicely done

Thanks, as always, Tom.
Love the near rhyme...and Sisyphus was a player...
Humanity's wound could heal with some love...but that is past tense these days.
Powerful words here...yes, the current has definitely changed.
