The Inevitability Poem

The Inevitability Poem

A Poem by John Sullivan

it’s funny how a place can become

a collection of memories

a baggage

a weight

something more than a mere location

more than a mere

physical perception

this isn’t quite a poem

I don’t know what it is

but when all boots

are made for walking

and all oceans

alive with currents

and endless time

Monarch Worm

devouring our sullen hearts

marching endless onward

towards

some misbegotten tomorrow

and all the four winds

press upon your back

Fate lovingly caresses

with

cold and clammy fingers

and you know

that one day soon

it’ll be time

to be moving on

again

Deep feelings of impermanence these days. Of course, in the Biblical sense, we are all dispossessed... strange children wandering the dark, perennially looking for something like home...

it's funny how we can be attached to places for different reasons. they take on a lasting presence in our memories and being (they can even shape who we are). it's not always an easy thing to let go and move on. good memories and places are worth holding onto. i'm sure adam and even thought about eden and what they lost - was their sin worth it? as my muse thoreau wrote, "Never look back unless you are planning to go that way."

So many places in our lives conjure up feelings. For me it's when I drive by my old grade school closed down and rotting away. I am drawn to an old tree in the back, where me and my friends used to hang at recess. To this day, leaving that behind hurts. I fell you expressed this wonderfully John. Thank you!

Thank you Brad, for reading, and your thoughts.
You would think that the constant cycle of thoughts, briefly interspersed with sleep, bring audio and visual hallucinations to the table would make us all desire a long lie in from reality, but even in these disturbing times we still find positives of mainly things like "well it might not happen", even when we know it probably will.
My only real hope is my last thought not being "but I only had ten pages of that book left to finish" or "I wish I had that last slice of cheesecake!"
We are the continuation of entropy, which began at birth and will outlive us all.
And on that cheery note, enjoy your Sunday John. 😃

I do believe I am happy where I am but know this will never be permanent. We all move on eventually. Some sooner than others. A thoughtful write John. Restlessness can be so unsettling. Wishing you a great weekend.
