Bartleby, the Scrivener, Scrivening

Bartleby, the Scrivener, Scrivening

A Poem by John Sullivan

sunlight streams through the cigarette smoke

lazily turning

through the air

that cigarette?

it was ok!

Soft piano music plays

Ghibli soundtracks, I think

but not from my fingers

I haven’t touched the piano in a while

but really, that’s ok

I had the second slice of sweet potato pie

sure I gained some weight

but I’m walking again, starting to eat right

and that’s ok

Kim has a cat now

sweetest thing

I think I’ll visit tomorrow

if that’s ok

I do wonder as to God

and a way

I can’t make heads or tails of it most days

but the voices tell me it’s ok

I wrote a poem today

about piano music

and sweet potato pie

and all the nothing I’ve got to say

it’s merely ok

the world burns

the trees outside grow wild

the river is overrun

I dip my toes in

when I may

you know

the water’s ok

after all

all the while

sunlight streams through the cigarette smoke

lazily turning

through the air
