Effortlessly DifficultA Poem by John Juda MitchellDo you remember that moment in your own relationships when your partner realizes that acting unfazed or disinterested is a great way to piss you off? I was there.Something’s amiss. There is a shift that comes. Then you don’t notice my idea of us. My language—convoluted I think. My day is night for you. I keep reaching, but for what? You refuse to recognize the promise: My life is your life. Trusting me is hard for you. Is that it? Let me explain without interruption. Please don’t give me this pain to hold. Why is it constantly your turn? Give me the moment to reach you. You turn your head so simply. So effortlessly. My dreams yearn to be heard. Are you listening? I want your life to rest in my concern. Is that too difficult for you? Give me your thoughts – but tenderly. Don’t force. Tell me your story. Always proud—standing tall. Never desire to glance my way. Won’t you realize that I want for you too? We said we were going to strive. Something always seems to snap. Break. There you are. I am here. It must escape you that love remains for you. My arms ache with deficiency. My mind races for the explanation. Do you have it? So here we are. The proverbial shift. It’s really a door. Won’t you come in?
