Iron Fence

Iron Fence

A Poem by Jamie Starlight

Standing in the gateway of an iron fence

A threshold between two realms

A borderline between two existences

The place I pace often

Either path is a betrayal of sorts

So I stay pacing and pacing

Comparing my choices

Part of me says I can combine both

Part of me says I belong where I’m told

And the last part says I deserve freedom

It may just be a phase

A new face that became my world

Or it may be that I am confined in four walls

I glance to the left and see him, a dark haired angel

Further back is two interesting kids, one in a black hoodie, and one with purple hair

This side is a prairie, beautiful and vast

But the sky is an obsidian wasteland

To my right I see

The people who brought me into this world

I see the struggle they endured to keep me clothed and feed

I feel terrible for all my thoughts

But I also see four dull walls, loneliness, and endless work

The sky appears bright but the sun is setting

I lean against the Iron Gate still unsure

I see parallels in everything

The white, black, and gray in everyone

I long to combine both worlds

Freedom and loyalty

Friends and kinship

But the more I try the worse it gets

Tighter the chain from the right

Stronger the emotions from the left

Is it control or is it protectiveness?

Is it both?

Am I in love or is it a phase?

Or a new part of life

Are these my friends or well they go away?

Or do I just have anxiety?

I want it to be black and white so I know where to go

But in the end the sky is gray

The gate is closed

There are no sides

I am alone

Wow! I feel stronger knowing I'm not the only one going through this motions. You comfortably expressed my deepest fears and premonitions at the moment. This fence is where I stand too, but I'm learning to let go and not feel guilty of this new path I want to take.
