Dust Till DawnA Poem by Josh HeightonIn The Dust We Trust From dust till dawn We serve like a chess board pawn Waiting, sitting, guns at the ready Sweat dripping, blood streaming, remaining steady Wind and dirt swirl round and round Straining the ear to hear the tiniest of sound What is the meaning of this Searching for this that bring mental bliss Figures appear in the distance Automatically my eyes scan for an enemy presence A faint click spreads across the front Men trigger the rounds prepared to send them on the hunt Flashes of yellow light cut through the air piercing the flesh, taking the first life with flare The faint figures that once stood Now lay still, stained, like wood You stare into their gazing dead eyes You can not stop that part of you that dies We fight and move on From dust till dawn
