Wither

Wither

A Poem by J.J. Matthews
"

Withering away

"

Once I bloomed and grew,

Believing that I could reach the skies,

Facing all adversity that the world threw,

And now I wither.

My roots were strong,

Seeping into the Earth and gripping it by the heart,

I was strong, fierce and relentless in my will to grow,

But now, I wither.

The rain fell and it never slowed me down,

Everyone else used their shields but I only drank,

All that tried to drown me only made me stronger,

Then I started to wither.

The decay burns my skin,

The grey keeps seeping in,

Wither, wither, wither.

What is wrong? What did I do?

Does someone above not want me to grow?

Does the world I live in hate me so?

There is only adversity, only sorrow.

And the worst of it all…

Despite how I wither,

I still wish I could grow.
