Night Cries

Night Cries

A Poem by Judy Ponceby

Can you hear late at night
When the stars come out to play
That sad and lonesome call
Of a Whippoorwill in May?

Calling forlornly into the night
Waiting to hear from any other.
The heavens sparkle with somber light
As our Whippoorwill cries sadly for another.

And there from far afield we hear
The haunting echo of its mate.
Giving full-throat-ed voice to her return
Comforting him in regards to her fate.

Wow nice. :D
This is a beautiful depiction of a spring night.
Also, the rhyming fits in so well, it is a pleasure to read :)
The whipporwhill is given such a distinct emotion; it's wonderful :)

i love this, judy. i think my favourite line is "The heavens sparkle with sombre light". the wistfulnessof the whole poem reminds me when, as a kid, i used to lie in bed listening to the night trains with their mournful sound from across the fields. excellent write, judy. :)

This is lovely Judy! There is something so forlorn and haunting about the sound of the whippoorwills call, you've captured it brilliantly!
