~ a love poem written in a Lai form ~

Mesmerized it’s true

by your eyes of blue

one glance

and I can’t construe

what one look will do

perchance

this is love, though new

I should give in to

romance

 

It could be divine

if your love were mine

thoughts of

your kiss sweet like wine

as our hearts entwine

in love

I’ll watch for a sign

the stars to align

above

 

Still, if the night grew

stars bid us adieu

your glance

stirs me through and through

what else can I do

but chance

something perhaps true

for me and for you…

Author's Note

The Lai is a french form of poetry. Each verse consists of nine lines with a syllable count of 5/5/2/5/5/2/5/5/2 and a rhyme pattern of aa/b/aa/b/aa/b.

Structured poetry is quite simple once you learn the rules, however, I find that so many times the structure holds back the creativity and flow of a poem which is why I enjoy freeverse poems so much.
