Shooting Star

Shooting Star

A Poem by Kaitlyn Raiford

Shooting star in the sky-
Brightest thing I've seen tonight.

Falling through down to the Earth-
A beautiful yet sour birth.

Could I not have watched you longer?
Seen your light shine bright and stronger?

Nestled higher than the night sky itself-
A precious treasure set at the highest shelf.

You'd be set up high for all to see-
Like a sparkling diamond set on a golden ring.

But yet, here you fall-
Now as dull as the words scribbled on bathroom walls.

Nothing more than a fallen grace-
A beautiful memory that left no trace.

You've moved on to another world-
Waiting to see how your new life unfurls.

I can only hope that you're still shining bright-
As bright as you did on that first night.

I'll be standing on that lonely path-
Crying enough tears to feed the grass.

Hoping us both to live life happy and great-
Yet knowing we were separated sadly by fate.

The night sky has faded-
It's not the same.

It lost it's brightest light-
A celebrity with no name.

I, too, can say that I've changed-
All that I hate is all that remains.

With your fall came my loss of love-
My lack of faith in the beauty above.

Though now I see you're still as bright as ever-
I am the one who grew duller.

I am an empty socket-
The broken light bulb.

I am the reason why the glass isn't half full.
