Show and Tell

Show and Tell

A Poem by Katie Kistler

thought I knew everything there is to know
about just how far I’d be willing to go
jumping fences and crumbling walls
felling towers both big and small
but the truth is that
all I seem to know
are just words
just words that sit and float

nothing ever sinks in
nothing’s ever sinking in
nothing ever sinks in
nothing’s ever sinking in

thought I was made of glass but if that’s true
I’d be able to look out and clearly see you
I’m not that delicate and not that open
a little prickly to the touch and hard to hold in
put a mirror to me, babe, so I can see
that the only person holding me is me

and you’re not just a lifeguard
there to help me float
water’s getting choppy, baby
scared to rock the boat

nothing ever sinks in
nothing’s ever sinking in
nothing ever sinks in
nothing’s ever sinking in

you’re a needle setting ink into my skin
beneath the meaning is the heart that lies within
and you’ve got more to give than I can let me
I’m changing locks and giving keys out, praying that you don’t regret me
and you won’t, I’ll give you reason
no, I won’t choke again
I’m finally sinking

nothing ever sinks in
nothing’s ever sinking in
nothing ever sinks in
nothing’s ever sinking in
