In the Winter

In the Winter

A Poem by Katie Kistler

I ask you how your day went
in the shopping mall
laughing at the children
when they trip and fall
your fingers are scrubbed of metal dust
and I’ve got no business letting myself fall in love

I don’t know you but I know you
you know what I mean
if you know me like I know you
you should tell me things

like what’s the f*****g deal with
everyone these days
people pleasing skills and
every smile is fake
but your voice is earnest at its core
and I have got no business letting you inside my door

I don’t know you but I know you
you know what I mean
if you know me like I know you
you should tell me things

no one gets it quite like you do
you know what I mean
we can watch the world go by
and forget everything

like future plans and mistakes
cons to balance pros
tears and fears and heartache
Earth is a black hole
but your fingers wrap perfectly in mine
and I have got no business wasting any of our time

I don’t know you but I know you
you know what I mean
if you know me like I know you
you should tell me things

no one gets it quite like you do
you know what I mean
we can watch the world go by
and forget everything

we can watch the world go by
and forget everything
but you and me
