Once upon a nightmare

Once upon a nightmare

Hollow hungry heart

you eat feelings for breakfast

Your voracious appetite

leaves a world with wounded lovers

What started as a dream

is now just a memory

not of a better time

but of a fake reality

I don't tremble at the sight of you

You look pretty as ever

But the fear creeps in

when you let someone near

I see your true reflection

the amount of sin woven within your soul

Holy hell I hope I wake up

But deeper in love with you I fall

Now it's all over

I'm a shipwreck on shore

A shattered man

Who cannot navigate himself to find love once more

Too afraid to sleep

Too tired to weep

Love is supposed to be the greatest thing a man experiences

I did experience it, once upon a nightmare

Excellent piece. I do believe I enjoyed every single line of this one. Of course, being me, I loved the title drop at the end of the poem.

Indeed, it should be the greatest thing one experiences. But when it dies...it does not go quietly or cleanly.

Bravo.

I like this. I understand why you put fell, but for me, fall would be a better word, and still matches, tho not rhymes with, soul.

I knew it, that's why I said it.
I love this piece, amazingly written and easy to read. The story is much like a nightmare and I imagined it much like a Tim Burton film.
A+++
