Can be 

But to fall back into that trap 

Would be a terribly foolish thing

This narrator is wise beyond years, becuz many of us continue the self-abuse most of our lives, before some catastrophic event convinces us to summon the strength to stop. Your statement is short, to the point, & spot on. Your tone is sarcastic, nothing at all "funny how addictive destroying yourself can be" . . . and I like that this universal observation ends on a note of hope & resolve. Altho your message is succinct & complete, still, I would love to see a few more details of how this manifests, between the opening statement & the closing resolution.
