Robin tells Amelia

Robin tells Amelia

A Story by Kameron Boulton

As Robin ascended the stoop to Hansel's red front door, he imagined his young comrade walking the same steps everyday and greeting his fiance with a kiss. He rang the doorbell and patiently waited for the young woman to answer. The seconds felt like hours that never seemed to end. When the door opened, a young petite girl with short black hair and deep green eyes answered. "Hello. how can I help you?" she asked in a cheerful sort of voice. This made Robin feel worse. "Hello ma'am. I'm a detective with the CCPD and I need to have a word with you." The girl invited Robin into the house. It was a smaller home with dark carpets and a hardwood kitchen. Again, Robin imagined Hansel entering his quaint house, going to the fridge and getting himself a drink while he complained about his day. Robin sat the girl down on the light coffee colored couch and began his explanation. "I was Hansel's partner on this case. We were investigating an abandoned apartment building and we encountered some resistance. Hansel and I opened fire and took cover behind a crate. I'm sorry to tell you this but, Hansel was shot in the head and died instantly. He didn't feel anything. I'm so sorry Amelia." By this time Amelia, the young woman who was to wed Hansel, was sobbing uncontrollably. A few silent tear drops fell from Robins face. It wasn't until then that the harsh reality set in. That little boy would grow up with no father, no guidance other than his mother who would no doubt be irreversibly damaged. Amelia would not be able to grow old with the love of her life. She would forever stay the widow of a young man who wanted nothing more than to give justice to his father and was shot down in immoral spite. The next few words that robin spoke, had a certain sincerity and graveness; "Amelia, I can honestly tell you, I have never seen anyone as determined and strong as Hansel. I only worked with him for six months but in that short period of time, I knew a man who would do anything to protect the innocent. He had a conviction that I have never seen in anyone I've ever met. I don't know much about god or stuff like that, but I know that there is a special place in heaven for people like Hansel. If there is ever anything you need, here's my card." Robin handed the woman a small business card. She looked Robin in the eyes and abruptly embraced him. "Thank you" she said. Robin stood up and placed a standard issue police Glock 19 and a silver badge that read, "Hansel Dreining. Carol City Police Department. special investigator" on the oak coffee table. Before leaving, Robin turned and said "The wicked flee so the righteous may pursueth"

I was wondering when I was going to read some more about Hansel Drein. I remember the man who killed him was shot; I can be glad of that.
