Kokopelli The Ancient Master of The Land

Kokopelli The Ancient Master of The Land

A Poem by anne p. murray- LadeeAnne
"

Kokopelli is a prehistoric deity depicted hundreds of times in rock art, some of it over a thousand years old, located in numerous sites in southwestern United States deserts and mountains.

"

From legends of old and ancient times

You come to us from a distant place

Some say you came from the stars

Dwelling in an invisible world

You bring fertile dreams into fruition

Bearer of the sacred seeds

Player of the singing reed

Your magical flute blowing in the wind

The distant thunder of drums

Bringing rain over many hungry, parched lands

Oh Kokopelli master of the land

Hear his melody

Those weary in heart and soul

Oh hump backed player of the flute

Yourself with broken bones

Many have seen your spirit

Beneath the dawning sunrise

Riding the sunlight over the lands

He sends his healing waters

Beyond the meadows wide

In his heart of pure being

He sings...

"Open your  heart

Take a journey with me

You who are weary in heart

And poor in land

We will dance the spirals

We will sing the songs"

Kokopelli your gift

You bring to all who hear

The magical beating of your lyre

We are all sons and daughters

Of this  fertile Star

We are mignificent glowing, loving children

Of Kokopelli, whose light goes forth

To brighten the world so all will know...

We are all One...

Enfolded in the arms of Love

There are many myths of the famous Kokopelli. One of which is that he traveled from village to village bringing the changing of winter to spring; melting the snow and bringing about rain for a successful harvest. It is also said that the hunch on his back depicted the sacks of seeds and songs he carried. Legend also has it that the flute playing also symbolized the transition of winter to spring. Kokopelli’s flute is said to be heard in the spring’s breeze, while bringing warmth. It is also said that he was the source of human conception. Legend has it, everyone in the village would sing and dance throughout the night when they heard Kokopelli play his flute. The next morning, every maiden in the village would be with child. Whatever the true meaning of Kokopelli is, he has been a source of music making and dancing, and spreading joy to those around him. Even today, Kokopelli, with his hunchback and flute, is always welcome in my home.
