A Poem by Lara
"

*

"

held dearly,
through the burn of what is,
and a promise of what yet comes:

will this one soften,
into shades blown deeper
than a cello?
will it hang
in a window's arch,
unwinding into rainbows?
or unroll with pinions and primaries,
imagining sky-ways?

there is a kind of darling
lay dreaming in sand;
in whom the glass-maker
looks inside,
and through,
and on behind ...

maybe a selkie.
or the falcon.
or wild dog of india ...

always, though -
and magically -
there is the shape
of a heart.

an hour-glass
that breaks every minute,
seeing what comes next?

A poem of intrigue and wonder Lara. I am left wanting to know what happens next. May that heart remain intact and not shattered like glass. My mind wandered in your words. Good to read you.

Marvellously mysterious, as befitting a Piece about a mythical being. 'unwinding into rainbows' is a particularly nice line. Really Excellent ✨️✨️✨️✨️✨️

Lara, I am trying to catch up with the writing of Friends I haven’t visited for a while, and I was shocked to find this poem, as I just yesterday posted my own Selkie poem. Everything is out there, we just need to let it find us, and I guess a selkie muse found us both. Your poem is more mysterious, more striking in its imagery. All night I will be puzzling over: “will this one soften, into shades blown deeper than a cello?” I don’t know, will it? The beating heart of your poem is just great: “maybe a selkie, or the falcon, or wild dog of India…”

I reckon you already know this but Selkie in Scots means seal and are a mythical creature hear that changes from seal to human form and there are some who believe me describing them as mythical is blasphemy! 😃
They are cursed, or blessed, depending how you see things as only being able to take one form at a time, but to me it's better that than no choice at all.

Exquisite wording - a fantasy laid in words that delightfully enhance the norm,

'there is a kind of darling
lay dreaming in sand;
in whom the glass-maker
looks inside,
and through, on behind ...

maybe a selkie.
or the falcon.
or wild dog of india ...

always, though -
and magically -
there is the shape

Thank you. I appreciate you! 🙏
Beautiful work, Lara. You paint this scene well.

Absolutely gorgeous!! I read it left and you wrote it slithering down as if I would follow, as if even you or anyone could follow, fair enough to demand the want to read this phenomenon again and again...that true madness of the in-between where poetry rises and laps against the throat, clogging well the obvious airways. Simply put, this is the cup of poetry I love!!
