When I Grow Up

When I Grow Up

A Poem by Whiskurz

Living in my troubled past
I ponder the road not taken
I thought I'd found my way at last
Only to be mistaken

The wayside holds my fallen dreams
But yet I can't turn back
That's the way it always seems
Never finding what I lack

Regret is now my shadow's name
He follows close behind
The two of us become the same
The blind leading the blind

Hope's become a foreign place
A place I cannot go
No plan to fix the things I face
I wander to and fro

"When I grow up I want to be"
These words never seemed so real
Without a purpose I didn't see
That I'd be standing still

Love it.
The first stanza is great. I know the feeling well. Have been doing that all weekend, living back in town, driving down the streets that I wandered around when I was young.
I was talking about the words "When I grow up I want to be..." just the other day. My friend says he screwed himself when wishing he'd grow up to be a paper boy. He got that job, accomplished that as a kid and is a stuck adult.
When I was really little I used to say that when I grew up I wanted to be Tom Brokaw and be married to Gonzo from the muppet babies.
Well those are both things that can never be achieved. I mean, how can I be Tom Brokaw when he's already Tom Brokaw? How can I marry Gonzo, when he's not real? Maybe my dreams left me floundering?

great poem! I loved it. I related to it!
