I will die your daughter

I will die your daughter

A Poem by Laylay
"

A poem about my less then ideal relationship with my mom…

"
I will die your daughter

I will always have your blood
From the months you carried me
To the moment you birthed me
I was always your daughter.

No matter the pain and hate
The constant abuse and suffering
All cause by your own malice
I was still your daughter.

Blocking you ,moving far away
No matter how wide I wedge a space
Cutting off all ties for the rest of my life
I will always be your daughter.

I’ll always have your eyes and nose
Speak like you, move like you...
Becoming the person I’ve despised
Slowing falling into endless self hatred.

And one day, I’ll lie awake and realize
I will die your daughter.

It's not a matter of good or bad writing, it's that this is you talking to Mom about things that are meaningful only to the two of you. So, what's in it for the reader?

No one woke today wondering how I feel about my parents, and hoping that I...or you, posted a list of complaints. They come hoping that the poems will make THEM feel and care.

And to do that takes the skills of poetry that have been developed over many hundreds of years.

Using them, instead of telling the reader that we cried at a funeral, for example, we give the READER a reason to weep. We take the emotions we feel and make the reader experience them.

But...in school we learn only the skills employers need, like the ability to write reports, letters, and other NONFICTION.

Use report-writing skills for poetry and it will read like a report. It has to because it's fact-based and author-centric. But poetry and fiction, with entertainment as their goal, uses an approach that's emotion-based and character-centric—a learned set of skills.

So, to take your mind from your current unhappiness, dig into a good book on the basics of poetic expression, like Mary Oliver's, A Poetry Handbook. You can download it via the link below.
