She Never Told

She Never Told

A Poem by Alexa L. Draven

Purple bruises embellish her once angelic and soft face,
with her boyfriend, no one knew about the horror that took place.
Each week, she comes up with a new story to conceal the truth,
and regrettably, everyone believed, they didn't have a clue.
Even after the painful beatings and fractured bones, she never spoke up,
because in complete denial, she thought she had found her true love.
After a few weeks, she became haggard and gaunt,
scared and broken, she believed his tormenting taunts.
Not able to leave because of his intimidating threats,
unwillingly forced to keep this grim, fatal secret.
The brutal beatings got worse, but she couldn't escape,
living in a violent and twisted nightmare, rape after rape.
No longer being able to think for herself or to even talk,
his controlling actions grew into obsession and he began to stalk.
Later, the frightening abuse went extremely out of hand,
in his mind, he thought, "if I can't have her, no one can."
Now, she lies underground, pale and cold,
all because she never told.
