I Am Human

I Am Human

A Poem by Alexa L. Draven

Why is it that I'm not allowed to listen to my heart?
every moment of pretending I'm fine rips me apart.
Would it make you feel better if I continue living this lie?
each passing day, my misery becomes harder to deny.
I have no right to shed a single tear,
all emotions but happiness are expected to disappear.
I am a doll, created to follow your demands,
faking it is a routine I've come to understand.
I was taught to never speak my mind,
comprehending my emotions is a waste of time.
I am not a statue, made of stone,
I am human, made of flesh and bone.
If you cut me, I bleed,
a sense of reality, I need.
My overpowering feelings can't be drowned,
it's my turn to speak, can you hear me now?
I've been silent for too long,
holding in my emotions so strong.
What makes me different from a human?
I've numbed myself as much as I can.
I shut myself down to put a smile on your face,
I gave in just to get you off my case.
Expressing the words of my heart, I'm forbidden to do,
because I'm not considered human to you.

This is beautifully written and I can relate. I especially love:

"My overpowering feelings can't be drowned,
it's my turn to speak, can you hear me now?
I've been silent for too long,
holding in my emotions so strong."

This poem certainly speaks loudly to me and I wish you all the best :)
