Masquerade

Masquerade

A Poem by Alexa L. Draven

Every morning, I disguise myself with this mask,
endlessly lying to the world is my daily task.
It's no challenge to fool them all,
they calmly watch as I fall.
No one will save me from this nightmare,
it's easy to trick people who don't care.
I try to keep myself together,
but I know I'll never get better.
I've been waiting for someone to wake me up,
but my frantic cries aren't enough.
I take a breath and draw all negativity in,
I start a new day, my sadness under my skin.
As I fall apart, I hide it all with a smile,
without a second thought, they believe this guile.
Displaying subtle hints is all I can do,
but it's no use, they only see right through.
I wish they would look deeper into these lies,
will it take my death to open their eyes?
Look beneath the surface, I'm not fine,
before it's too late, believe me this time.
I feel like I've been screaming for a thousand years,
but no one is able to hear.
My faith in them begun to fade,
they can never look past my masquerade.
