Sleep ParalysisA Poem by Alexa L. DravenA sleep paralysis episode I had a few years ago.
Pitch black, dead of night,
yellow glow streams from headlights. Pale, haunting faces emerge from the shadows, petrified by fear, you know you must go. Blood paints their mouths, like a child wearing their mother's lipstick, trying desperately to keep your composure, but as they inch closer, you begin to panic. You give one last glance behind you as you escape your doom, The only thing staring back at you are their eyes, shining like the moon- Boom! Boom! Heavy hands bang on your door, hinges giving out, ice cold terror engulfs you to your core. Nowhere to go, nowhere to run, try to make it through the night, until you see the light of the rising sun. No one here to help you now, just you and the brute beating the fragile door down. Your brain working overtime, imagining escape scenarios in your mind, it's too late now, the door has just broken open wide- Your mind is awake, but your body is not, just you with the voice in your head mistaken to be your thoughts. Dread uncomfortably settles in your stomach as you listen but can't understand, the voice unleashing gibberish ramblings of a madman. Paralyzed and mute, your own body holding you captive, enduring, waiting for it to pass, you remain inactive. You lay bound by the invisible binds of your mind, your sanity begins to break, suddenly, the voice stops, the binds come undone, and you awake- © 2025 Alexa L. Draven |
