Summer Nights

Summer Nights

A Poem by Alexa L. Draven
"

2019. The summer my husband and I first met.

"
Late night trip to the movie theater,
the movie wasn't good, but the memories are all I remember.
The first time you hung out with me,
you said you kept looking my way instead of the movie.
Afternoon walks that turned into midnight strolls,
your company reignited the fire in my soul.
From belly laughing at our inside jokes to relieving the weight on our minds,
I wasn't certain if you liked me or if you were just being kind.
From being strangers to becoming best friends,
We wanted more than what we had but we continued to pretend.
Our summer nights continued, I told myself it's just a crush and in time it'll disappear,
but the closer we got, my feelings became much more clearer.
We kept lying to ourselves, telling ourselves we were only just friends, nothing more,
But the more I got to know you, my feelings became stronger than they were before.
Day drinking screwdriver Smirnoff under the sun,
acting like dumb teenagers, being goofy and having fun.
Little did I know you felt the same,
you had the bullseye but you hesitated to take aim.
Too afraid of losing a good friend, we retreated to the security of the unknown,
spoiler alert: in two years, we both make it out of the friend zone.
Until then, we nurtured our bond until our foundation was unbreakable,
building a relationship on top of a friendship, we're unstoppable.
Summer nights now bring me back to those times,
summer nights now are so much better now that you're mine.
