Notes From the Battlefield

A Poem by H.M. Eccher

"

Fields ablaze with the blood of our neighbors and brothers,

the fallen ones foreshadow my end.

I look into the empty eyes of one I knew;

that could have been me.

My heart aches for home, but I could never be at peace again,

always poised for the attack.

Skies ablaze with the weapons of superpowers,

the live one beside me goes down.

I cannot look at the corpse of my best friend;

I wish it had been me.

My heart forgets home and all I had before;

this is all I know.

The bunker ablaze with curses against God and everyone,

as the rest of us are taken down one by one.

I look into the panicked eyes of my leader;

this time, it's me.

I shut my eyes with no inkling of a thought home;

my heart is with my men.
