Inside of Me

Inside of Me

A Poem by LeslieNoel

Inside of Me

I live inside of the skin and bones

that I was born with.

Veins, capillaries-

they are all mine.

In these nooks and crannies, my spirit dwells.

But this wasn’t always so.

I had to dig into the heart chambers

and look behind the folds in my brain.

Spirit hid-

but not inside of myself.

She jumped from person to person,

camouflaged by another’s dreams, wants, and desires.

Pieces of me scattered on fire.

I came to be a hunter-gatherer,

searching swiftly for those parts,

collecting and stealing them back whenever I could,

secreting them away,

stealthily,

until I placed those pieces

back like a jigsaw puzzle-

blood in the veins,

capillaries in the heart,

corpus callosum in my brain,

spirit coursing through each part

and every piece.

Now I continue to cease

being broken apart.
