Shipwreck

Shipwreck

A Poem by LeslieNoel

Shipwreck

Change is coming"

and it does not come gently.

It delivers a slam

to my consciousness.

My mind,

a ship heading toward dark and frothy waves,

large in its entirety,

threatens to engulf my tiny vessel.

Submerged,

my ship is slashed apart

by the crash of angry blue-green seawater.

I’m spit out into the open.

Sharks stretch their gray, hungry fins below me,

circling endlessly,

tirelessly,

waiting for a bite of dinner.

I fight to keep my head

above the screaming surface

as it throws a tantrum for the ages.

“It’s all me now,” I think.

I’m the only one

who can ensure my survival.

Taking a deep breath,

I tread water-

doggie paddle,

because that is all I know how to do.
