Maplestory VideoA Chapter by Little LotusIntro Maplestory is a free-to-play, 2D, massive multi-player online roleplay game. It was released by the Southern Korean company Wizet in 2003 and since then has acquired a cult-following and has over ten million players. Plot / Characters Plotwise, Maplestory may seem a little generic and simplistic at first glance. The benevolent goddess that created the world is sealed away by a black magician. This throws the world into chaos, and five heroes come together to defeat him. Four of these classes you can choose to be. A few hundred years later, and it looks like he's back again. And of course, it's up to you to stop him. At higher levels, the quests begin to reveal a surprisingly rich history, filled with warfare, betrayal, and magic. You just have to look for it. The classes you can choose are the Evan, Aran, Explorer, and the Cygnus Knight. Each one has their own backstory and unique skills and abilities, such as a pet dragon that grows and matures, combo skills, and multitudes of subclasses you can choose as you level up and advance. The gameplay is a simple keyboard oriented control style. There are your typical hot keys for quick item and skill selection and use, shortcut keys, and the wonderful attack and jump keys. There are several chat channels so you can speak with your party or your buddies; Everyone or just whisper to one person. Your character is run through side-scrolling map after map. It is a directional game based on what quests you skip and accept, but either way there is always a place for you to be working towards. You interact with NPC's and other players with a click of your mouse, which opens your options. If there is something for you, such as a quest or information for a quest, either a question mark or an explanation point will appear in a bubble above the character who has what you need. Your character levels by earning experience, and distributes the skill points to both qualities and skills. There are always monsters of an appropriate level for you to fight, just as there are several worlds to explore. Community / Quests Quests are an integral part of the Maplestory experience. It's through them that you get exclusive items, experience, fame, and learn more about Maplestory. That being said, there an awful lot of them. The moment you begin there are ten quests that open up for you, and dozens more will be unlocked each time you level. Maplestory has also included party quests, which allow you to team up with 2-to-6 other players to complete dungeons or compete against other teams. These are the best for experience, and where you can meet a lot of friendly people. Community-wise, Maplestory is still your run-of-the mill MMORPG. There will always be people call you 'nub', begging for money, or asking you for inappropriate favors. Maplestory tries to deter this sort of behavior through a fame system, but if this doesn't work it's easy to change channels to escape, or to simply choose a less populated server, of which there are many. However, there are plenty of nice people, and higher level people will usually help you with quests are give you some directions if you ever need help. Still, Maplestory is best played with friends. Audio/Visual The game is a 3D cutesy style, like chibi anime. The colors are vibrant, attractive, and layered with shading. Textures are used to clarify items, such as wood or baskets. The minimaps are color coordinated to show locations within a certain distance. There is different music for each location on a map. Some are the same, some are similar but with little tweaks here and there, but for the most part, the music is creative and separate for each place. Our overall opinion Maplestory is the type of game that you can go back to, even though you know what to expect. It is fun to play with your friends and a great way to pass the time. However, it is not an addicting game, and a person can only handle so much of anything at one time. We give it a (insert rating:: I say 7-8/10?) and a "Yay~!" for replay value. © 2010 Little LotusReviews
