Port phronesis vs sagacity starboard theory

A Poem by Lord Von of Vaughn

Title: Port Phronesis vs Sagacity Starboard

Purpose:
a developing theory about how personality development and social influence shape decision-making systems in individuals and society.

Theory Statement:

Basic personality traits that develop while growing up are influenced by multiple external sources that act by proxy. These influences can accelerate or redirect development in either quick or progressive ways.

Some individuals encounter a wider range of influences, while others experience fewer but more consistent ones. A broader range of influence may provide many options for development, while a narrower range may offer more frequent reinforcement of specific ideas.

The primary influences involved in this process include:

Family and friends

School

Work

Culture

Media

Politics

The degree to which these influences shape someone depends on the person's level of introspection and their ability to compare new ideas against an established baseline of thought. Regardless of the individual, however, these influences will have some level of effect.

The outcome of development is largely determined by the experiences a person consumes and accepts.

Example:

In schools it is often taught that “everyone is a leader.” If this message is repeated enough times, by certain authority figures, and delivered at the right moment within a sequence of reinforcing events, it can leave a subconscious impression. If the idea is not immediately examined or compared to a personal baseline belief, it can embed itself as an untested assumption.

When this occurs repeatedly with different messages, it can create the beginning of what I call a double-minded system of governance within the individual, referred to here as Port Phronesis.

Port Phronesis develops when influences are absorbed without that pause for evaluation. Over time this produces a layered internal system where conflicting assumptions coexist.

In a broader sense, this system can be nurtured through repeated exposure to selected types of media and cultural influence that produce an in-between or divided reaction among large groups. When large populations are affected in this way, it can lead to confusion or retreat into identity-based groups or victim-based frameworks rather than open understanding or humility.

This outcome is reinforced collectively through the same influence channels listed earlier: family environments, schools, workplaces, culture, media, and politics.

Parental guidance, or the lack of it, plays a significant role in determining how strongly these influences affect a developing individual. The level of guidance helps determine whether introduced ideas are critically examined or absorbed without evaluation.

Expanded Concept of Port Phronesis:

Port Phronesis can also develop through immoral suffering or difficult life experiences that produce a hardened, world-weary form of insight. In this state a person adapts through cynical or cold-natured understanding of how people and systems operate.

The result can be a compartmentalized internal structure of behavior. In one compartment the individual operates within normal social roles such as work and hobbies. In the other compartment are actions or impulses that may involve crime, immoral behavior, or participation in chaotic environments.

These compartments allow a person to maintain outward function while periodically releasing suppressed or chaotic impulses through double-minded behavior. These behaviors may also be reinforced by participation in groups that share similar cynical or morally detached perspectives.

In this sense, Port Phronesis becomes a survival-driven adaptation where insight into human nature exists, but it is filtered through bitterness, pragmatism, or moral detachment.

Opposite System: Sagacity Starboard

The opposite of Port Phronesis is what I call Sagacity Starboard.

Sagacity Starboard represents a continuous evaluation of thoughts, influences, and experiences. It involves the active nurturing of the subconscious, instinct, and accumulated wisdom through deliberate reflection.

Rather than absorbing influences passively, the individual measures ideas against moral fairness, personal baseline beliefs, and long-term growth. This process includes questioning, wandering intellectually, and seeking improvement through understanding rather than reaction.

Sagacity Starboard therefore acts as a self-correcting system. New ideas are examined, compared, accepted, rejected, or refined before becoming part of the person’s internal framework.

In contrast to the compartmentalized and double-minded tendencies of Port Phronesis, Sagacity Starboard produces a more integrated structure of behavior. Work, interests, and personal pursuits exist within a unified moral framework rather than separated compartments.

Because the individual continually evaluates instinct, wisdom, and moral fairness, there is less need for chaotic release or double-minded behavior. The system instead seeks balance, growth, and clarity through ongoing introspection.
