The Distance of RegretA Poem by DesireeI wrote this while I was dating a guy who moved to California for school, and I realized that I had taken him for granted after he left. He ended up being a jerk, though!
I wanted just a day or two without you
Now I can't bear to go another day without you
I let your words stir useless anger inside of me
Now your words are all that's left of you for me
Distance makes us wise,
But for that we pay a price,
We regret and mourn,
The hearts we've torn
I thought I'd never lose you when you chased me then,
I thought I could hurt you and you'd be back again,
Then you left to chase a dream and I held open the door,
But not a day goes by that I don't regret not holding you more
Distance makes us wise,
But for that we pay a price,
We regret and mourn,
The hearts we've torn
My friends wonder if I'll be unfaithful in my lonely state,
I tell them I'm not lonely but angry with fate,
I didn't mind being alone until I fell in love with you,
Now no one else could fill this void but you
Distance makes us wise,
But for that we pay a price,
We regret and mourn,
The hearts we've torn
I lie awake in bed and stare where you once lay,
And I hold my blanket tightly and pray,
I pray that you will take that place again,
And that I'll still be in your heart until the end.
