Angst

Angst

A Poem by Lydia Shutter

When the silence is just too loud

And the ticking of the clock taunts

When my brain tells my heart

I worry too much

I must lighten the weight of weaponized words

Truly I cannot be everything to everyone

No longer can I be strong and responsible

(Especially not in the darkness of night)

I beseech the morning

Needing it to rescue me

Knowing the sunshine will help erase

Feelings of angst playing hopscotch

through my soul

Don't we all come from what we once where Lydi...that little girl you used to be who didn't want to be a big girl and sleep with the light out?
Right now night is my friend, in the calming quiet of silly O'clock in the morning where nothing moves other than the odd flutter of a wing or the breeze through the leaves.
But I know the long dark night of the soul shall catch up to me and those odd and fearful sounds of night-life will morph into night terrors that make me once again reach for my night light, while I duck under the covers like mini-me did, safe in the knowledge of a childish mind that no matter how scary they may be, I have the duvet of protection on my side, which every child knows will keep them safe as long as they keep their eyes shut and doesn't set as much as a pinkie toe on the floor until it's morning.
Or at least I hope that is how it will be I'm my twilight years, where I cross my fingers, knees, toes and ears that nothing goes bump in the night.

The sleeplessness that comes from the souls ambition. There's things to be done. What? We do not know. But that also is intriguing, what hidden purpose or journey is our mind calling us to? And so we chase Alice's rabbits down all the paths before the rest of sleep can find us. I'd venture we all worry too much. Nicely crafted. I enjoyed.

As of late I find myself almost constantly hiding from words, sound bites, and, well, people-y things, because of my angst. Well worded piece. ~Jim

I totally understand, Jim. Thanks for the visit! Lydi**
very emotive, Lydi!! I feel you. we use wonderful gifts to listen and support people too much sometimes .. we can get use to that gifted level of "being there" and people sometimes start to presume it .. we just have our limits and i want your speaker to just let herself fall into the soft cushion of letting go and letting others pick up the slack .. we, unfortunately, replacable and can give ourselves some mental health days .. love this expressive poem .. so relatable on many levels of application .. great pic too!! that weeping blood eye .. wow!

You are so very welcome
Your words epitomize 'do unto others as I would.. ' and the all around allows you to feel the same for yourself. Night is what is can be, a hiding place, a nest of self-dom

'I beseech the morning
Needing it to rescue me
Knowing the sunshine will help erase
Feelings of angst playing hopscotch
through my soul'

It will..

You’ve nailed the human condition in these troubled times that we find ourselves in. An excellent piece of writing.

We all go through those worries or angst moments for many reasons. They can be overwhelming indeed.
There are calls to think positively to replace the negative thoughts.
A truthful poem on human conditions.

This piece is deftly crafted and admittedly, Lydia, an unexpected surprise.
With a title such as 'angst' I imagined I was about to read something that took on quite a different tone, and find there something tightly wound...
This piece, though, is remarkably ... not that. Yet it delivers on the title with a grace and strength (I dare say) which is simply...beautiful. "I must lighten the weight of weaponised words" is a line that struck me like an oracle's tea leaves.
Nice work.
I like this.
